Scarlet Sunrise, Session 3: Prison Break! Redux

Session 3 of Scarlet Sunrise started off with our heroes in two places, thus violating the most sacred rule of DnD. Mercy was trussed up Hannibal Lector style in a Tok jail cell (Xyla, her ex and arresting officer, ordered the guards to not talk to her). Meanwhile, the rest of our heroes stood with the Brotherhood of Limbs and began trying to make a plan to bust their captain out, using stingray17's telepathic abilities to coordinate a plan. I used the Engagement Roll rules from Blades in the Dark, the best game ever, and provided the players with a crude-ish map of the police station I totally didn't make in MS Paint.

Aforementioned Map

The would-be rescuers ran into a bit of a kerfuffle as they tried to decide whether to go in loud or quiet; stingray voted loud, while Shaggy and Amara voted quiet, so they all snuck onto the police station via the roof. Before the climb, however, communist robot Unit 36 secretly gave stingray a few sticks of dynamite, saying to use them when needed. stingray responded by hugging Unit 36.

The actual breakout was bizarrely smooth? I had established that Xyla was enjoying her lunch break with her husband Dan, a former Exemplar from Purity named after the best character from the Venom movies. Shaggy and Amara inexplicably tried to break into the armory and failed, while Stingray pretty effortlessly broke into an air vent and helped get Mercy out of her bindings by casting a Sleep spell on her one remaining guard. At that point, the alarm had been sounded due to various other shenanigans, and they all fled, though not without stingray dropping the dynamite into the holding cells, killing a dozen officers (including Xyla).

Fanart of Dan made by Mercy's player

I...wasn't entirely sure where to go with the session after that,  to be honest. I hadn't done a lot of preparation beforehand, and all of it had been eaten up by this point. The players signed on with the Brotherhood, with the goal of robbing a bank at some point (we discussed how Daggerheart had money but nothing to spend it ON.) The gang then visited Mercy's mom, who was on the planet, and they had a long heart-to-heart about safety and love and bonding, and also the reveal that Amara and Mercy's Mom know each other???? (Mercy: Did you fuck my mom???)

I'm not super happy with how this session went? I feel like what we wanted to do ended up rubbing up against the rules, or maybe just my Dungeons and Dragons Brain, because I feel like things like attacks rolls and damage rolls don't really lend themselves to like...stealth, and I ended up at the end of the session with a whole bunch of Fear I didn't use, so I guess the bank heist is gonna have a lot of things go sideways. We'll see. I've also started being on my hormones again, so I'm just getting like...increasingly down about stuff at the moment, but hopefully that goes away soon.

Next time: The Bank Heist, and maybe I'll let our heroes level up!
